Airport sizes

Post by joefremont »

A member asked me about an airport in Greece, wanting to upgrade it from 'International' to 'Intercontinental' and I informed them that in our system 'International' is actually considered a larger airport, but it got me thinking, should that be the case? Right now these are our sizes listed in order from smallest to largest.

"Private/Military"
"Municipal"
"Regional"
"Intercontinental"
"International"
"Super Airport"

So my question is should 'Intercontinental' be considered a larger airport than 'International'?

The term 'Intercontinental airport' really does not mean anything and is more a marketing term than anything else, I think the Houston airport uses that, but I would think that its quite common for aircraft to fly internationally and stay in the same continent but its less common for aircraft to fly between continents and stay within the same country (Russia would be the exception unless you consider Eurasia to be a single continent).

As far as level of effort, its quite small. Our database just stores a size number which maps to constants in the code, simple change of those constants and the label changes.
