FSX or FS9?
I've found (with other planes) that the 2D and the VC in FSX not always agree on what is happening outside of the plane.
I trust the VC more in FSX.

Im not sure which A340 you are using atm..
I use the Abucus Fleet A340-600..
It has many switches comparing to the standard Jets in FS9..
However,, Mine looks like the lights are on when I start, especially during the night... BUT that's not true..
There is only switches to use, and it doesnt have anything like On/Off (especially for the lights)
Here are 3 pictures define that..
Hope that helps..

this is because the landing lights are retracted when the gear is retracted,
its a limitaion in the model because its only the taxi lights which should go out on gear retraction the Just flight 340/330 retracts them all.. look at your center CRT display, you will notice the green landing light caption (if landing lights are selected on), notice it goes out on gear retraction and comes on on gear extension without moving the landing light switch
you can leave the gear down till you pass 1000ft or live with the 5%
