It actually doesn't sound like a client problem and more of a corrupt scenery problem. Have you recently installed any scenery (for that part of the world)? If not, the fact that it happens at cruise leads me to believe it might actually be corrupt default scenery. I hate suggesting this to anyone ...

The problem is since fixed, I simply selected a fleet I had created and then pressed assign, the appropriate checkboxes appeared when I did that

Not only could it be lightning reflecting of high altitude ice particles, but it could also be whats called a sprite ( a mambo jambo lighning bolt) reflecting or refracting off high altitude moisture particles.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to make the AI a little bit less blind? Does AI ...

I think it maybe an an AFCAD issue? Are you using sceneries other than default...as well If I recall, The ILS at boston on the default is a little strange anyways. Look around AVSIM for a fix to the afcads is the only thing I can reckon.

Does the Aircraft "appear" to be riding the rails all the way down? If so, it could be an afcad issue.

Use the 1000 feet beetween 11,000 and 10,000 as a buffer zone to get your speed down to around 240, you shouldn't have any problem then. Hope that helps.
